A Steady Hand for Medicine Hat’s Energy Future
September 14, 2025 | Government, Medicine Hat, Politics
Medicine Hat is a city built on resilience, innovation, and a strong sense of community. I’ve come to appreciate the pride this city takes in its public services and the thoughtful way residents engage with decisions that shape our future. The question of whether to support a Municipally Controlled Corporation (MCC) to manage our energy services is not a simple yes or no. It requires careful consideration of the facts, respect for our shared values, and a commitment to listening to the voices of our neighbours.
Respecting Our Legacy, Preparing for Tomorrow
Medicine Hat’s tradition of public ownership in utilities has provided low rates, local control, and a reliable source of revenue. However, the conditions that supported this model are changing. Local gas production is declining, market and environmental regulations are becoming more complex, and the city faces nearly half a billion dollars in infrastructure upgrades over the next decade.
An independent review by KPMG presented three options: maintain the status quo, create an MCC, or sell our utilities. After thorough consultation and analysis, Council decided not to proceed with an MCC at this time. That decision reflects the diverse opinions of residents and experts and acknowledges the need for further discussion.
The MCC: Promise and Pitfalls
The MCC model presents potential advantages. It could offer professional oversight, more flexible governance, improved access to financing, and continued City ownership of assets. These benefits are worth exploring, especially as energy markets become more volatile and technical demands increase.
At the same time, there are serious concerns. Reduced transparency, higher administrative costs, and the possibility of diminished democratic control must be addressed. Many residents worry that public assets could eventually slip out of local hands, and that governance could become less responsive to community needs.
A Practical Path Forward
We must move forward thoughtfully, with a clear understanding of the risks and benefits. My approach to future decisions would include maintaining direct City ownership of our energy assets, ensuring transparent public engagement, establishing strong oversight mechanisms such as a Rate Review Committee with citizen representation, and tying any future MCC to clear community benefit goals like affordability, reliability, and reinvestment in Medicine Hat. Any proposed changes must be independently verified before being adopted.
Leadership with Accountability
This is not a time for ideology or rushed decisions. It is time for careful leadership, grounded in facts and guided by community values. As your councillor, I will bring a steady hand, a listening ear, and a firm commitment to Medicine Hat’s long-term interests. Together, we can protect what works, improve what doesn’t, and make informed choices that reflect the needs and aspirations of our community.
